Whimsical Unicorn Mixed Media Decor

Hello Craft Friends! Hope you are having a great week so far. Today I'll be creating a Mixed Media Unicorn project! This project is for any beginner Mixed Media artist or advanced crafter. I hope you'll find it both fun and inspirational. To create this project I'm using the April Tres Jolie Mixed Media kit! This kit includes this Unicorn from Little Birdie Crafts and includes a nice sturdy base! You'll also receive Ranger Distress Grit paste, which I love! It adds texture to any project. In addition you'll receive Prima Finnibair Art Extravagance Jewel Effect paste-crushed crystals ( adds a nice glistening effect) Antique Gold PearlEx powder,Prima Dresden Gold Wingspan Angel wings, and Ranger Enamel Accents-Wild Orchid" Here's a photo of what you'll receive in this month's Tres Jolie Mixed Media kit:

From my stash I am using Heavy White Gesso, Dazzle stickers, jute cord, heart charm, and scrap paper, palette knife and xaco knife, Fushia acrylic paint, waterbrush and small Prima flowers, and Distress Rock Candy glitter.

To start this project, i took the White gesso and applied to my Unicorn head, body and legs. The Gesso prepares your surface, acts like a primer  when adding other Mixed Media mediums and prevents it from soaking through the wood or chipboard. Repeat on the other side. Let dry. See photo:

With a pallet knife apply your Distress Grit paste onto the Unicorn's hair, horn and tail. Let dry. See photo:

After your Grit paste has dried, I applied the Enamel Accents-Wild Orchid over top of the Unicorn Hair and tail.

Take some white acrylic paint and apply over the Unicorn body, legs and head. Let dry. Now take your Finnibair Jewel Effect paste-crushed crystals and apply over top of acrylic paint on the same areas. See photos:

While the Jewel Effect paste-crushed crystals is still wet, I sprinkled some Distress Rock Candy glitter. Shake off any excess glitter. This adds some extra Sparkle! Set aside to dry. See photo:

While our Unicorn dries, take the wood base and some Fushia acrylic paint and apply with a paintbrush around the edge and bottom base. Let dry. See photo:

Using some scrap paper in my stash, I cut a piece and glued over the top of my base stand. With a xaco knife, I trimmed away any excess paper and cut open both slots from my base stand with my x-acto knife. With my sanding tool (my stash) i smoothed any rough edges including both slots. Check to make sure the Unicorn hoofs slide into your slots. Here's acouple photos:

Here's how my base looks after I glued my paper to my base and trimmed away my excess paper.

Take the Pigment powder-Antique Gold and with a waterbrush i sprinkled some gold accents over top of the Unicorn hair, tail and horn. I also painted the bottom of the hooks with the Antique Gold powder. See photos:

With a black marker (my stash)I drew a mouth and some eyelashes on both sides of my Unicorn head. I glued 2 small Prima flowers on each side on my Unicorn head. I took a piece ofblue/white twine and added a heart charm, then tied around my Unicorn's neck. Here's a photo:

Next take both Dresden Gold Wingspan Angel wings. I glued them back to back, and bend slightly in the center to give some lift. See photo:

Glue the wings onto the top below the neck. See photo:

Now you can attach your Unicorn to its bottom base. I added some Dazzle sticker hearts and the word Magical on the bottom base. Here's a photo:

Now your Unicorn is ready to display and enjoy! Here's are some closeup photos of my finished project:
