Butterflies Take Flight Mixed Media Canvas

Hello Craft Friends!

Thanks for being here today! I can't believe July is almost over! I hate to have summer come to an end but at least the warm will stick around awhile longer.

Today I'll be creating a Mixed Media Circle Canvas with our Tres Jolie July Mixed Media Kit!

This kit has lots of different Craft mediums to play with and create your own unique design! I hope my project will inspire you and even if you are new to Mixed media, you'll give it a try!

In the kit you'll receive a Circle Canvas blank, (7 & 3/4 x 8 inches), Ciao Bella "Protea Rice Paper, Crafters Workshop 6x6 stencil-mini cubist, cheesecloth, Finnibair Mechanicals Scrapyard Butterflies, and Art Extravagance Jewel Effect Paste Tigers Eye Stones, Wow Clear Gloss ultra Embossing powder and Ranger Perfect Pearls and Perfect Gold Pigment powders. There's still time to order your kit now!

Here's a photo of the July Mixed Media Kit:

From my stash I am using: Folkart Vintage White andTan acrylic paints, Tim Holtz Idea-ology Transparency, Finnibair Melange pebbles, clear ink, and heat embossing tool, waterbrush, Modge Podge and paintbrush.

To begin my project, I applied some Folkart Vintage white paint over my canvas cirle. Let dry. Then add some tan acrylic paint over top. Let dry.

Take out your piece of rice paper, and using a small paintbrush and apply some water around each inage you want to tear. See photo:

Carefully tear your Rice paper around the image. See photo:

Take a paintbrush and some Modge Podge

and apply on the area where you want to place your Rice paper image. See photo:

Apply your Rice paper carefully and smooth out edges. Apply a light coat of Modge Podge on top. Continue this with all Rice paper pieces. See photos:

Now take out the stencil from our kit along with the Jewel Effect Paste. Lay your 6x6 stencil down onto areas on your canvas. Using a palette knife (my stash) apply some of the paste over top. Carefully lift off your stencil. Continue this process until you are satisfied with your design. See photo:

I took the Ranger Pearl Gold Pigment powder and with a waterbrush I applied some around the edges where my Rice paper and texture paste are. See photo:

After your paste has dried you can proceed. Here's how mine looks so far:

You can use stamps in your stash and add a sentiment if you like. I wanted to add a image to match the design theme of Butterflies so I took one of the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Transparency pieces, trimmed around the butterfly and postage sentiment.

Taking the piece of cheesecloth in the kit, I cut apart some smaller pieces and glued at the top and bottom areas on my canvas.

I took some clear ink and applied in scattered areas on my canvas. I sprinkled some of the WOW Clear Embossing powder over top and heat embossed all areas. This adds some interesting texture along with the cheesecloth. Here's a closeup look:

I added the Transparency  towards the right side. I used a vellum clear tape to adhere this to my canvas.  See photo:

On each of my Finnibair Mechanicals Scrapyard Butterflies I drybrushed some Heavy White Gesso over the top of each butterfly.

Then glued them in scattered places on my circle canvas.

To finish decorating my canvas, I glued some of the Finnibair Mechanical Winged Butterflies in scattered areas. I also glued some of the Finnibair Melange pebbles. Here's some photos!

You can add a metal hanger or jute cord on the backside of your canvas so you can hang and display it! Here's another photo of my finished Mixed Media Canvas!

I hope you enjoyed this project. Thank you for stopping by the Tres Jolie Blog! I'll be back next month with more crafty projects!

Happy Crafting!
