A Shabby Lantern

Just in time for Autumn – Tres Jolie’s October Mixed Media Kit is full of just about all you need to make a great piece of Home Décor. I’ve added a (very) few mediums from my stash and have come up with this shabby lantern.

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial…

Begin by coating all EXCEPT the window with clear gesso. This will give it “teeth” that allows the rest of the mediums to adhere to the surfaces.

For this next step, you’ll need mini art stones and crackle paste. (I used the crackle medium from the September Mixed Media kit.) Spread a small amount of the paste onto your work surface.

Using your fingers, spread the paste here and there over the surface of the lantern. Allow to set; this will take several hours.

Begin to “paint” your lantern, adding the various colors of mist here and there until the entire surface is covered. ***Be sure to allow each layer of color to dry before adding the next, or you’ll end up with “mud”.***

I applied the mist in this order: Cattail Copper Brown, Tibetan Poppy Teal, Ponderosa Pines Olive, Red Hot Poker Orange, and Autumn Leaves Crimson. I finished with some of the Octoberfest Orange Magical Shaker, adding a little water to make a liquid.

Once all the colors are set, use gel medium to glue the sisal and flowers to your lantern.

Finish your project by dipping the medium and mega art stones from the kit in a bit of gel medium and placing them in random spots. One they’re set, color them with a little more of the mist.
