Mixed Media “Trees by Streams of Water”

Happy Wednesday y’all!!  Michelle here, giving you a fun dose of mixed media today!!

Today I’m playing with the awesome Redesign Modeling Material by Redesign by Prima, Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Spray by Ranger & Lindys Magical metallic powder that were in the August mixed media kit.  I also picked out a stamp I liked with a simple, deep cut design to use that would make a good impression.

I started out by taking a good portion of the modeling material and pressing it flat on to a nonstick surface that I knew it would release easily from.  Then  I firmly stamped the rubber stamp into the modeling material.

I allowed the modeling material to dry, you can speed this up a bit with a heat gun but you may need to allow it to dry a few hours to overnight.

Next I sprayed the piece well with the “bundled sage” Distress Oxide Spray and lightly blotted the excess to create a unique effect.

Finally I applied a bit of water to my work surface and then began to dip my wet paint brush in the Lindy’s Magicals gold metallic powder, and then brushing along the edges and high spots of my stamped modeling material …rewetting my brush as needed.

I applied my finished piece on to a prepared mixed media canvas board.

If you would like to recreate the look of this board, I simply applied some texture medium that had a lot of grit to it and added some extra texture pebbles to the edges then painted the entire board black.  After it was dry I brushed on some of the gold Lindy’s magicals kinda like a rich water color, leaving it almost powdery in some spots for extra grit.  I then applied some light sage green acrylic paint to the raised textured areas and tucked some natural moss under my adhered stamped modeling material piece.

I’m pretty smitten with it and I hope you are too!  Hopefully this helps you think a bit out the box on how you can use the mediums included in this month’s amazing mixed media kit!!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–August 2020 Mixed Media Kit–*Follow Along With Us*

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog!

Today I’m bringing you my “Follow Along With Us” project for the month using the August Mixed Media Kit. Now, I’m not going to lie, this project fought back! This was just one of those times that I was having problems getting my hands to do what my brain was picturing. As you’ll discover in the video, in the end I had to do a voice-over to explain what I did, but I’m rather pleased with the end result!

The stems are actually a rather happy accident. I didn’t originally plan for them to be “broken,” but when they came apart I realized I rather liked the look. Now, as I’ll also note in the video, I would paint the “Bayou Boogie Gold” Magical Powder on my mushrooms and stems before adding them to the canvas. If you do (and don’t add the “Antique Linen” first) they will match the flowers. If you do it the same way I did in the video then your mushrooms will look like mine here. When I was working on it I hadn’t planned to have them gold originally, but after I got them glued down I decided to make them pop off the canvas more! (Have I mentioned this project just wanted to fight me every step of the way? LOL!)

Check out my video and follow along!

You don’t need a mould to use modeling material! I formed my stems and mushrooms by hand! I didn’t try to make them the same or perfect, I just played around with the modeling material until I liked what I made. (Which isn’t in the video due to this project fighting me the whole time! If I remember correctly, I thought my camera was running, but I was mistaken. Sorry!!)

At some point in time, although I can’t say when exactly after everything this project put me through, I decided to cluster all the flowers from the mould together where the mushroom stems intersected!

Even though the acrylic sealer had an effect on the Oxide Spray, I can tell you that had not happened to me before, so I am thinking I should have set it aside longer to dry. I’m not disappointed, just surprised. And sometimes surprises work out!

I hope you enjoyed this project and that it gave you an idea or two about how to use the items found in this month’s Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie! Thank you for joining us and I’ll see you again soon!

Tres Jolie Kit Club – July 2020 Cards, Tags, & More Kit

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog!

Today I’m bringing you the junk journal I created using this month’s Cards, Tags, & More Kit. I had such a blast making this journal, and even though I didn’t originally intend to kill the kit, as I kept going it became a personal challenge to see if I could get everything in!

For the video, I put the flip-through in at the beginning, then followed it up with the process. I hope you take a peek at it and enjoy it! Below the video, I have added a few photos of the finished journal.

Video:

I used the new Tim Holtz color, “Speckled Egg,” throughout the journal. It went beautifully with the Stamperia papers that came in this month’s kit. For the resin pieces, I used some of the “Speckled Egg” oxide and embossing glaze, and some “Gathered Twig” Distress Crayon.

I pieced together the smaller “left-over” pieces to cover the “manila” colored tags that came in the kit and added some string from my stash.

I cut out the ATC sized cards from the paper and attached them to one side of the popcorn bag that came in my kit! (Your bag may be different) I turned the two music prints into envelopes and added them in, and peeking out of this one is a little notebook I made from the largest left-over piece I had and some standard notebook paper.

The final page and inside of the back cover, which contains a flip out.

I hope you enjoyed this project and had a chance to see my process video, most of it is sped up, but I do stop to explain in quite a few areas! Thank you for joining us here at Tres Jolie!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-July Mixed Media Kit-Use Your Wings

Hey, all!

Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog. Today I’m bringing you my final project this month using the second transparent gear from A.B. Studio that came in the kit, along with the alcohol inks from the kit and some items from my stash.

DSC_0100-FRAMED

For this project, I really wanted to showcase the transparent nature of that A.B. Studio gear so I used a gel medium to add some texture while retaining the transparency. Check out the video below to see the whole process as I was doing it!

Video:

DSC_0103-FRAMED

I really wanted a ton of texture on my gear, so in addition to the stenciling, I have some sisel and some texture beads.

DSC_0102-FRAMED

I used the “Sunshine Yellow,” and “Sunset Orange” alcohol inks in the area where I would be placing the cluster.

DSC_0110-FRAMED

I used clear embossing power on some of the cut-out pieces, then used the “Purple Twilight” alcohol ink and the “Snow Cap” Mixative to add some color to the mushroom tops and some of the flower clusters. When I sprayed the ink with some rubbing alcohol I just let it bleed out how it wanted. I didn’t dry to clean it up or move it.

DSC_0111-FRAMED

On a few of the other embossed, cut-out pieces I used some of the “Snow Cap” Mixative.

DSC_0109-FRAMED

I think the olive green on the butterfly and words was the perfect complementary color to use with the three colors of alcohol inks that came in this month’s kit.

Thank you for joining us here at Tres Jolie, I hope you enjoyed this project and that it gave you some ideas of what can be done with items from this month’s Mixed Media kit. I hope to see you again soon!

July Mixed Media Kit:

Mixed Media kit

In addition to items from this month’s kit (*from previous Tres Jolie kits), I used:

*Prima Stencil Item #564278, *A.B. Studio “Vintage Elements 3,” Tim Holtz Alcohol Blending Solution, 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (AKA Rubbing Alcohol), Ranger Extra Thick Embossing Powder – Clear, Ranger Blending Tool, Ranger/Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink Applicator Felt, Brea Reese Texture Pebbles, JudiKins Diamond Glaze, Liquitex Gloss Super Heavy Gel, Sisal, Ranger Heat It Craft Tool, Ranger Mini Mister

“Just Imagine” Mini Junk Journal

Hello again crafty friends!! Well July is already here and I can’t believe how quick the months seem to by going by! I hope that everyone is doing well and staying home and keeping yourselves safe! Well this month I am excited to share the project that I have been looking forward to creating for some time now. As most of you might that this months kit for the Cards, Tags, & More kit is a mini junk journal kit that I helped Kim put together….just helped a little bit! I loved it! Thanks Kim!! Anyhow on to my project!!

I began by cutting the papers from the 8X8 Stamperia “Imagine” paper pad from the kit. I cut the papers to the sizes of canvas pages and as I was creating , I did end up using a couple papers from a vintage stash I had cut and of course I also used some of the music sheets from the kit. I also did some light stitching on some of the pages not all because I am fairly new at sewing.

Once I finished adhering the paper on the pages, I began making my pockets which included some of the music sheets from the kit, I used lace from the kit & on the last page I used on of the ephemera cards from the kit. I created some tuck spots using the larger tickets from the Tim Holtz Tickets included in the kit, I used the smaller ones on some of the coffee/tea dyed journaling papers (as seen in the above right photo & the bottom left photo the larger ticket). I also did some stamping on the journaling papers.

You will also notice on one of the pages I added the envelope onto the page and added the bingo card inside as a journaling spot and adhered one of the music flares onto the envelope. This was the only flip page I created on this album.

I cut out the tiny tags from one of the 8X8 sheets which I absolutely love tiny tags! I did add some in the pockets & tuck spots but the rest I made a quick tiny tag album adhering them with some twine. I also created a small album from some of the cut outs that to me looked like pages from a book, I binded them with the same twine. I used a few of the milk caps and a lot of the ephemera. To be honest I had to stop myself from trying to use up every last piece of supplies from the kit because I started to notice it was getting too chunky!

I have added a short video to share the entire album but I did want to add that on the cover I used the closure that came with the album, I cut it to fit my album and had adhered it before adding my cover and back page. I also fussy cut one of the beautiful mini art dresses that were printed on one of the pages of the paper pad from the kit. I inked the edges with Tim Holtz Vintage Photo Distress Ink and I adhered it with some foam tape, I adhered the Gothic Frame and then added this dress. I had cut also some of the beautiful sentiments that were throughout the papers and chose one for the title of my mini junk journal which read ” The creation of beauty is Art”! Lastly I had already added a different lace on the cover but then last week when I went to my doctor appointment my hubby took me over to one of my favorite consignment stores which I was surprised was open, and found some vintage laces so I came home and added one of these instead! I hope u like how it looks!

Well crafty friends, I sure do hope that you liked this mini junk journal that almost doesn’t look too mini by the size lol but I sure loved creating this small piece of art using this fun kit!! So if you haven’t purchased yours yet , head over to the Tres Jolie website before they sell out!! I’ll be back on Friday with another fun project using the July Scrapbook kit!!

Hugs,

Jeanne

Tres Jolie Kit Club-July 2020 Mixed Media Kit-Art Deco

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog!

Today I’m bringing you a décor piece I made using items from my stash, some epoxy, and the A.B. Studio chipboard & cut apart sheet and alcohol inks from this month’s kit.

DSC_0015-FRAMED

Waiting for the epoxy to set up was the most time-consuming part of this project, and the second most time-consuming part was trying to decide how to arrange the clusters. As you’ll see in the video below, I went through a few arrangements!

Video:

DSC_0033-FRAMED

Before pouring the epoxy, I coated the chipboard piece with some Lindy’s Embossing Powder.

DSC_0020-FRAMED

I just added drops of the alcohol ink to the epoxy and “dragged” the color around, but didn’t mix it in thoroughly, creating the ribbons of color.

DSC_0029-FRAMED

The clusters are made up mainly of the pieces cut from the A.B Studio sheet that came in the kit, but I added some odds and ends from my stash (that I had collected from previous Tres Jolie Kits!).

DSC_0022-FRAMED

As a note, the gel medium behind the cabochons eventually dried transparent!

DSC_0038-FRAMED

I set this up in a window so you could see how the light shines through.

I hope you enjoyed my project this week, and that it gave you some ideas of what can be done with the alcohol inks. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for more projects from the other members of the Tres Jolie Design Team and join our Facebook Group to see other subscriber’s projects!

Tres Jolie Kit Club – *Follow Along With Us* – July Mixed Media Kit – A Day At the Beach

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog!

Today I’m bringing you my first project for this month using the Mixed Media Kit. Recently, we have had some requests for more detailed instructions for the projects we create, so last month we started the “Follow Along With Us” series, where each month we will focus on a different kit and create a project using only items from that kit, staple items (i.e. glues), and/or household items (ex: isopropyl [rubbing] alcohol). For this project, I created a video to follow along with and I hope I didn’t overexplain or underexplain anything!

DSC_0081-FRAMED

Because alcohol inks dry so quickly, this was a rather quick project to put together! I just grabbed up my gel medium to adhere the flowers and photo, which I mounted on some cardboard for rigidity, and my rubbing alcohol that works well as an alcohol ink blending solution.

Check out my video for the full details and process, and make it with me!

Now, how about some close-ups?

DSC_0085-FRAMED

The top of the larger flower cluster on the left of the photo. You can also see some of the blending between the three alcohol inks, and the splattering of the “Snow Cap” Mixative.

DSC_0095-FRAMED

A close-up of the blending for the sky. As you can see, the splatters give a sense of depth depending on how much the “Snow Cap” reactivated the color behind it.

DSC_0097-FRAMED

I hope you enjoyed this project and it helped you in using the items from the kit this month! Make sure you keep an eye out each month for more of our “Make It With Us” videos and/or written instructions! I’ll be back next week with my project using that beautiful art deco chipboard from A.B. Studio.

July Mixed Media Kit:

Mixed Media kit

In addition to items from this month’s kit, I used:
70% Isopropyl Alcohol (AKA Rubbing Alcohol), Ranger/Tim Holtz Alcohol Blending Solution, Blending Tool, & Alcohol Ink Application Felt, make-up wedge, drinking straw, Liquitex Matte Super Heavy Gel, BEST 1” Double Sided Tape, Krylon Workable Fixatif, Ranger Mini Mister

Shabby Little Mini Book

Happy Wednesday y’all!!

Now y’all know I like to mix things up a bit!  LOL!  I normally get the mixed media kit but this month I got both the mixed media kit and the scrapbook kit, so this little mini is made with this month’s scrapbook kit.

When I opened up that scrapbook kit and saw those cute stitched frames by 49 & Market I knew I was going to be making this mini!  And the cardstock by AB Studio was just perfectly designed to make these little pages…these pages were all cut from one sheet of cardstock!

I knew they would be perfect to frame up those lovely designs on the AB Studio cardstock!  For this I just cut the cardstock to fit the frames and glued them to the back side of the frames.  I then cut a small strip of scrap card stock and taped it to the back left of each “page” to help form more of an area that could but used as a spine.  More on how I used that additional edge in a bit.

Next I turned my attention to the cover, I added a part of the chipboard chain and gears.  I just cut a portion of the design and I painted it with some of the white crackle paste I had sitting on my desk from the mixed media kit.  Although it didn’t really crackle since I wan’t using it in the way crackle paste should be used to crackle properly, I do like how it looks.  You could absolutely just use whatever white paint you have.  I also inked it with a brown ink pad along the edges before glueing it down.

Here you can see that additional scrap cardstock I used to create a bit of a spine.  I used my standard size hole punch to punch two holes in it (all the way through each sheet) and ran the lace through to form the binding of the book, tying it in the front of the book.

I used the same white crackle paste from the mixed media kit to paint the Darice flowers and sprinkled some gold glitter from one of my previous kits on them.  I also tucked on the the Tim Holtz Timepiece watch faces in there as well after giving it a quick wipe with some white paint.

As you can see the book is not filled just yet, I can’t decide how I want to use it but I couldn’t let the opportunity pass to create it and now it’s made and ready to fill!  It will be a great gift or quick art journal when the mood strikes me!

Thanks for stoping by today!

“Why” Layout with Rae

Happy Sunday, everyone!

By now you’ve probably seen that the June scrapbook kit features the gorgeously vintage collection “In the Past”  from AB Studio.  This is the second layout I’ve made with the kit so far:
I started out with adding some inking and stenciling to my background paper.  I used some stitch line stamps with black archival ink.  I made two “rows” or layers of the framing.  Next, I used some grey distress ink and a stencil that would peek out from the design cluster, as well as the corners of the page.

AB Studio always has amazing images to cut out- I used a lot of the cut outs as layers behind my photo, as well as the 49 and Market stitched frames from the kit.  The crotched lace is also from the kit: I lightly inked the lace and used a file to tatter the edges for a distressed look. (The tiny clips are from my stash: Tim Holtz.)
In the closeup above you can see the Bottle Cap letters that I used for the title: they were very bold, so I toned down the painted part by adding some brown distress oxide ink, then wiping it with a paper towel.

You can also see the music notes chipboard- only one came in the kit, but I had two, and thought it would be nice to use them both.  I added some Lindy’s Stamp Gang embossing powder that we received from a kit a couple of months ago.
In the flower clusters, I used flowers from the kit, but wanted to add some smaller flowers as well so I used some Prima flowers from a past kit to compliment this month’s flowers.  I also added some jewel flowers from my stash. (Tim Holtz Assemblage jewelry)  I also added some vine die cuts using another piece of paper from the kit.  I also added two of the metal clocks from the kit as well.
