Mixed Media Gears Canvas

Happy Hump Day Y’all!!  I hope this post finds you well and y’all have been crafting and quarantining!  Today I’m sharing a mixed media canvas I made with my Mixed Media Kit this month

Can we take a moment to talk about these gears?  Whoa.  I mean, Amaz.  Yeah.  Anyway.

I started out by giving everything a good coat of black gesso.  Since I wanted this canvas to be full of texture and grit and a bit of glitz, I also added some texture yumminess from my art stash but you can absolutely pull this off with what you have in the kit.  You could possibly mix a bit of texture powder from last month’s kit in with the black gesso (or even a little sand) and get a similar grit.

I also sprinkled some of the glass glitter from last month’s kit as well.

I also used the metallic teal and gold to do some great aging effects on the gears.  It gave them the perfect patina.

I pressed the gears down into the wet texture paste and that is how I adhered them down to my canvas.

Using a pallet knife I applied more of the gold metallic paint across the canvas.  I just love the artsy effect it gave the piece.

Here is a short process video for you to see the piece in action!

I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at this process and found it inspiring it to go and make something beautiful today!

Altered Paint Brush with Rae

Happy Saturday!

Altering paintbrushes has been a real trend in the scrapbooking world for a while now, and Tres Jolie kits has an amazing mixed media kit this month that has a brush and A LOT of embellishments and mixed media to make your own! Check it out:

I just love how much mixed media you get- with white, black and clear gesso, the possibilities of different looks are abundant, combined with three different mica powders to boot!

Here’s the brush I made using the black gesso with all three colors of the mica powders.

I started my brush by gluing on a bunch of the embellishments. I did add a few items from my stash- the circles art Melange art pebbles from Prima Marketing.

For the next step I added two coats of black gesso, and letting it dry completely. Then I mixed up a batch of each color with water and gum arabic to create a permanent color on the black gesso.

On the bottom of the brush, I added the purple mica powder/water/gum arabic mixture. I could have let it air dry, but I wanted to give the bristles on the brush a worn texture, so I used a heat gun to melt the bristles.

On the side, I added the pink color. The colors mixed together nicely on the front of the brush, but I liked how this concentrated pink came out.

At the top of the brush, I added the blue mica mixture. I decided to not add as much mica on the circles because I wanted them to stand out. I added some pink wax paste to the circles after I finished applying all of the micas.

And, lastly here is a closeup to show how the mica colors blended together.

I’m anxious to get some more cheap brushes so I can try out the micas with the clear and white gessos.

And, great news: we still have a few mixed media kits available, so if you haven’t subscribed, you still have a chance to get an altered brush mixed media kit HERE!
