Mixed Media Journal Page – The Weird Girl

Today I’m sharing an art journal page that I’ve been wanting to attempt.  Last month when I requested to have both the Mixed Media kit and the Scrapbooking kit I didn’t realize I’d have all these glorious flowers so when this package arrived with all this fabulousness I could not help myself so out it came!

This page is really the result of both the mixed media and the scrapbook kit, although you could do it with just the mixed media kit with some alterations and additions from your stash I’m sure…But ya’ll…those beautiful green flowers from the Scrapbook kit were begging to be on this page so I just had to include them!  LOL

I started by using a sheet from a vintage short hand instructional book and used the “13 Arts” Gel Medium to adhere it to my journal page.    Apply the gel medium with a nice size brush fairly generously and evenly, taking care to smooth out any bumps and wrinkles.

Once dried I used a rubber stamp and some permanent ink to stamp a lady’s face as my base to build upon.  If you are a good sketch artist (which I am not), you could just draw your lady’s face.

Next I just went nuts glueing my “49 & Market” flowers from both the mixed media kit as well as the scrapbooking kit on to the page forming the lady’s hair.  I just used hot glue because I knew it would make a good bond.  I’m sure there is a better and more appropriate art or mixed media adhesive to use for this but this is what I know so this is what I stuck with so this guys wouldn’t go anywhere.

I then used a permanent marker to draw a rough body shape for my lady and I glued on a few of the flowers as her buttons.  I went back and applied a bit of the olive green “13 Arts” acrylic paint to her body to make her stand out a bit more.

Finally I added a little rub of the Prima metallic gold wax from last month’s Mix Media kit to all the edges of the vintage paper.

Oh and I tucked in one of the Prima metal butterflies in her hair as her little hair accessory.

The title is a sticker by Tim Holtz from my stash and it’s all done on one of my pages for my Bad Girls Couture Haute Mess Journal.

This is the complete Mixed Media kit, it’s one of my faves!  If you are looking for a great kit packed with product to keep you busy while you are social distancing, this is it!

The Heart That’s Meant To Love You

So it’s the end of my mixed media kit and I’m still playing with all the yummy paints and chipboard!  LOL!  This week I got in my art journal and just played!

After I gessoed my journal page I reached for some gold crackle paste from my stash to give a good squishy layer to press that chipboard into to give it an embedded look.

Once I pressed the Creative Embellishments chipboard in I smoothed a bit of the paste over the top in a place or two to make the chipboard really feel like part of the page.

I set the page aside to let it dry overnight so the crackle could really emerge and develop.

Once the crackle developed and dried I got to work with all my mixed media goodies!

I pulled out the beautiful pink Prima acrylics in the February kit and lightly brushed them over the crazed page, even watering them down a bit to create a watercolor effect over the white portions of the page.

I dropped some black ink in areas and let it just find it’s way through the cracks and I inked the raised areas of the chipboard and the edges of the pages with a stamp pad.

I added back some of the gold shine by rubbing some areas with the gold prima wax.

Next I added some black graphite texture paste from my stash and sprinkled some gold glitter while it was still wet.

Finally I finished it all off with some emelishements, a cute Vintage Girl sticker raised with pop dots and a Tim Holtz paper doll die cut.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all do something beautiful today!!

Art Journal Cover

Hey guys, Kim here with another project using our Cards, Tags and More kit. We’ve been creating on the inside of our Art Journal, so don’t you think it’s about time we do the cover?

I just kinda had fun with the cover, no real direction other than I wanted to use some crackle paste (from a paste MM kit) on the cover and to use the watercolors.

First off, let’s take a look at what’s in the kit this month:

The kit contains a full set of washi tape, a stencil,a yard of burlap, rice paper, metal trinkets and some watercolor.

Here is my completed cover:

I placed all my trinkets down where I wanted them (I added a few extra from my stash). Then I covered the entire front only with white crackle paste (including the trinkets0. I went really heavy in some spots for a bigger, deeper crackle effect.

Here is a tip with crackle paste. Once it starts to dry and crack, you can use your heat tool to speed up the process. Just don’t hold it too close.

I added watercolor, with a watercolor pen (dried between each color). Then I dug deep into my lost flower collection to find a few flowers to add. Once placed I added some art pebbles. For the final touch I did a bit of stamping and then I went over the high points and edges with antique gold wax paste.

I am extremely happy with how it turned out.

How about some close ups:

Mini Journal Shadow Box

Hey y’all!  Have you ever just needed a fun chunky little art journal but wanted to keep it displayed somewhere that would remind you to create art?  That’s the issue I was faced with.  I wanted a simple little journal that I could create some fun little art journal pages in that would be quick and easy but I wanted to keep it out on display so it needed to be a work of art all on it’s own and fit into my decor and style.

So when I saw the trays in the January mixed media kits I knew one of them was destined for a display box for a little mini art journal that would encourage me to make art.  But I still had to make the journal!  LOL!  So I’ll walk you through my process.

I began with some small squares of watercolor paper and just used masking tape to tape them together accordion style till I was happy with the amount of pages I would have.

I folded them back to back so each page would be something I could create on back and front as I flip through the book.

I then bound the spine with some old gaffers tape that was in my scrap stash.

Next I gave my mini tray from the kit a coat of white gesso

Then rubbed the edges with the “ancient coin” gold metallique acrylic paint by Finnabair from the kit.

I trimmed down the Garden Vine from 49 and Market Paper Goods, removing all the flowers but leaving the leaves.

I rubbed the leaves with glass bead gel and allowed it to dry well.

Next I rubbed the leaves with more of the “ancient coin” gold acrylic paint to reveal the texture.

I bent and glued the reshaped vine into the tray to form the “holder” for my mini journal

I then took a loose piece of the water color paper cut to the same size as the book and applied it with pop dots over the vine to hide where it attaches to the tray.

Finally I placed my book in the tray and twisted the vine over it carefully.

I’m quite pleased with it and can’t wait to create!
