Mixed Media Gears Canvas

Happy Hump Day Y’all!!  I hope this post finds you well and y’all have been crafting and quarantining!  Today I’m sharing a mixed media canvas I made with my Mixed Media Kit this month

Can we take a moment to talk about these gears?  Whoa.  I mean, Amaz.  Yeah.  Anyway.

I started out by giving everything a good coat of black gesso.  Since I wanted this canvas to be full of texture and grit and a bit of glitz, I also added some texture yumminess from my art stash but you can absolutely pull this off with what you have in the kit.  You could possibly mix a bit of texture powder from last month’s kit in with the black gesso (or even a little sand) and get a similar grit.

I also sprinkled some of the glass glitter from last month’s kit as well.

I also used the metallic teal and gold to do some great aging effects on the gears.  It gave them the perfect patina.

I pressed the gears down into the wet texture paste and that is how I adhered them down to my canvas.

Using a pallet knife I applied more of the gold metallic paint across the canvas.  I just love the artsy effect it gave the piece.

Here is a short process video for you to see the piece in action!

I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at this process and found it inspiring it to go and make something beautiful today!

Hump Day Two for One!!

Happy Hump Day!!  Today I’m working predominately with the March Scrapbook kit.  I normally stick with the Mixed Media kit but this month the scrapbook kit looked so amazing that I had to get it!

I am somewhat out of practice with my scrapbooking but I had to give it a go and do some catching up on some of my pics.  Since I wasn’t sure of my direction I didn’t do a video but rather took pictures as I went to show you how it came together.

I started out with the clover chipboard circle and painted it with some of the olive green acrylic paint from the mixed media kit I got this month.

Next I applied the gel medium (also from the mixed media kit) to the edges of the clovers and sprinkled two kinds of glitter on them.

I then set that aside and smeared on some gold crackle texture paste from my stash to the left corner of my page to both add a crackle element as well as to adhere my chipboard clovers down to the page.

I then positioned my photo and clovers and pressed them into the paste.  I added a bit of adhesive to the top corners of the photo to make sure it stayed in place.

I also added a few flowers tucked in the scrolls of the chipboard to give it a finishing touch.

Here is a pic of the complete Scrapbook kit.

NOW…for my BONUS project!!  As I said, I’m normally a mixed media gal…so I had my March mixed media kit that I still had TONS of supplies left in (because it was packed this month y’all!) and since I’m a jewelry maker by trade I whipped up this little cutie!

For this one you just need to use an epoxy graft glue like E600 to glue the metal pieces together (you can use hot glue in a pinch but it may not last after a bit of wear).  Next attach the chain with jump rings using a couple pair of needle nose jewelry pliers, adding a clasp at the back.

Here is the complete mixed media kit below.

Mixed Media Journal Page – The Weird Girl

Today I’m sharing an art journal page that I’ve been wanting to attempt.  Last month when I requested to have both the Mixed Media kit and the Scrapbooking kit I didn’t realize I’d have all these glorious flowers so when this package arrived with all this fabulousness I could not help myself so out it came!

This page is really the result of both the mixed media and the scrapbook kit, although you could do it with just the mixed media kit with some alterations and additions from your stash I’m sure…But ya’ll…those beautiful green flowers from the Scrapbook kit were begging to be on this page so I just had to include them!  LOL

I started by using a sheet from a vintage short hand instructional book and used the “13 Arts” Gel Medium to adhere it to my journal page.    Apply the gel medium with a nice size brush fairly generously and evenly, taking care to smooth out any bumps and wrinkles.

Once dried I used a rubber stamp and some permanent ink to stamp a lady’s face as my base to build upon.  If you are a good sketch artist (which I am not), you could just draw your lady’s face.

Next I just went nuts glueing my “49 & Market” flowers from both the mixed media kit as well as the scrapbooking kit on to the page forming the lady’s hair.  I just used hot glue because I knew it would make a good bond.  I’m sure there is a better and more appropriate art or mixed media adhesive to use for this but this is what I know so this is what I stuck with so this guys wouldn’t go anywhere.

I then used a permanent marker to draw a rough body shape for my lady and I glued on a few of the flowers as her buttons.  I went back and applied a bit of the olive green “13 Arts” acrylic paint to her body to make her stand out a bit more.

Finally I added a little rub of the Prima metallic gold wax from last month’s Mix Media kit to all the edges of the vintage paper.

Oh and I tucked in one of the Prima metal butterflies in her hair as her little hair accessory.

The title is a sticker by Tim Holtz from my stash and it’s all done on one of my pages for my Bad Girls Couture Haute Mess Journal.

This is the complete Mixed Media kit, it’s one of my faves!  If you are looking for a great kit packed with product to keep you busy while you are social distancing, this is it!

The Heart That’s Meant To Love You

So it’s the end of my mixed media kit and I’m still playing with all the yummy paints and chipboard!  LOL!  This week I got in my art journal and just played!

After I gessoed my journal page I reached for some gold crackle paste from my stash to give a good squishy layer to press that chipboard into to give it an embedded look.

Once I pressed the Creative Embellishments chipboard in I smoothed a bit of the paste over the top in a place or two to make the chipboard really feel like part of the page.

I set the page aside to let it dry overnight so the crackle could really emerge and develop.

Once the crackle developed and dried I got to work with all my mixed media goodies!

I pulled out the beautiful pink Prima acrylics in the February kit and lightly brushed them over the crazed page, even watering them down a bit to create a watercolor effect over the white portions of the page.

I dropped some black ink in areas and let it just find it’s way through the cracks and I inked the raised areas of the chipboard and the edges of the pages with a stamp pad.

I added back some of the gold shine by rubbing some areas with the gold prima wax.

Next I added some black graphite texture paste from my stash and sprinkled some gold glitter while it was still wet.

Finally I finished it all off with some emelishements, a cute Vintage Girl sticker raised with pop dots and a Tim Holtz paper doll die cut.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all do something beautiful today!!

Earring Holder Shadow Box

As some of you all know, in addition to paper crafts and mixed media arts, I am a jewelry designer with a small business.  I am always looking for fun ways to display and showcase jewelry pieces.  And with Valentine’s Day tomorrow, how cute would something like this be to present a pair of earrings to a friend, mother or sister?

This month in the mixed media kit we go that wonderful wooden shutter from Prima Marketing.  I thought and thought on a cool way to use it and I kept coming back to this jewelry display idea.

I love how it’s a great home decor piece that fits in well with the style of my home but it’s functional too…this girl loves a good functional piece!

So I started with a shadow box frame with wings in it that was given to me by a neighbor that was about to throw it out.  I knew it would make a great project so I’ve been hanging on to it for just the right decor piece.

Using the gold prima wax I rubbed the wings to highlight them and give them some great metallic shine.

I also rubbed the edges of the shutters with the gold wax

I painted the heart chipboard with white gesso then a coat of the prima acrylic paint before adding a layer of white crackle paint to tone it down a bit.  Next I finished off the look with a rub of the gold wax.

The Darice flower & mini grapevine heart made the perfect embelishement to put on top.

Inside I wrapped a piece of chickenwire ribbon around the inside and bent around the back before gluing and securing down to the shadow box.

You can see it here being used to display my Valentine earrings.

It really is a fun piece to play with and experiment, you could also place a photo or even a small piece of cork board inside the shutters for a different approach.

If you haven’t gotten your Mixed Media kit, you really should!  Here is the break down of what is in it…

Unbound Heart

Hey y’all and happy Thursday!!  Today I’m working with the fun valentine themed Mixed Media kit and know you are going to love it!

I started with the burlap heart by Darice, spray painting it with a light coat of white paint.

Next I did some painting effects on the Darice Flower embellishments with the Prima Marketing- Art Alchemy -Sparks Acrylic Paint in both the shades provided in the kit.   I also added some texture paste and sprinkled some coarse glitter to add more texture and shine.

Next I painted more of the acrylic paint on to the Creative Embellishment chipboard piece (mine was a heart cluster but the actual kit will include a phrase sentiment as pictured in the kit photo below).  Finally I added a photo embellishment.

I also rubbed all of the grapevine twig portions of the heart with the Prima gold wax so it resembled metal or wire.  I finished it off with a ribbon to hang it.

I love how it looks hanging in my home!

Check out the process video below for a closer look and more details on how it all came together.

Translating That Thirst in Art

When I sat down to create today I had something on my heart and on my mind and I honestly couldn’t get past it till I worked through it and since I had already used the wooden trays and floral elements from my January mixed media kit I pulled out my box and grabbed those gorgeous metallic paints by Prima and those Tim Holtz stencils got to work.  I also grabbed my favorite Bible journaling supplies, my water colors.

It’s pretty simple, I didn’t even sketch it out.  I just freehand water colored directly on the Bible page and once dried I came back and highlighted it with a felt tip pen.  Next using a fine brush I highlighted the cactus with the gold acrylic paint in the January mixed media kit.  I also highlighted the verse I was focusing on as well.

I then placed one of the Tim Holtz stencils on the page and stenciled on more of the beautiful gold paint, as well as a few splatters of gold paint.

I’m so in love with this page!  It’s just what I needed.  So have you ever used your art supplies in your Bible (a dedicated journaling Bible or art Bible)?  I dare ya!

Now y’all go do something beautiful

Altered Wings

How dreamy are those big metal wings in the mixed media kit this month?!  I had so many ideas for them, do I go all steampunk on them or sweet and flowery?  Since we had those awesome Prima flowers to play with I went more fairy dreamland with my thought process!

I basically just slathered the entire set of wings with the crackle paint, more as a base coat than for a crackle medium because I didn’t prep the wings first so I didn’t expect much actual crackling to occur.   It ended up kinda looking plasterish which I loved.

I also applied the crackle paint to the flowers as well and sprinkled the fine glitter over the wet paint on both the wings and the flowers.

When the paint was dry on the wings I gave them a wash with some diluted brown acrylic paint and then rubbed them with the Turquoise InkaGold to highlight them.

The flowers also got a light rubbing of the Turquoise InkaGold as well.

You can see all the details in my process video below!  Check it out!
