Explosion Box With a Twist

Hello everyone! This is Cris and today I’d like to share a fun project with you, but first I have a confession…I’m OBSESSED with boxes! I love to make them, alter them, collect them…and I have even more fun making little books to store in them.  So of course you know sooner or later I’d share my obsession as a DT project.  This fun little gem here is what I refer to as an “Explosion Box With a Twist”; when you lift the lid you’ll find more boxes within the box! It’s a dream if you share my obsession…hahaha! It’s also very simple  to create and not too time consuming.

The  Tres Jolie kits pair perfectly with this project because they are so versatile and work seamlessly together. For example, on the box lid shown here I used elements from all three of our June kits…

The pretty butterflies are from the Cards, Tags & More kit, as are the crochet lace, tag (behind the clock face), cut-out arrow, clock face, leaves, and cute birdie on the upper right. The Darice flowers and stunning AB Studio “In the Past”papers are from the Scrapbooking kit, and the chalkboard and chipboard pieces are from the Mixed Media kit. I even used some of the cool packaging Kim includes in our kit boxes.  The only element in the project that was from my stash is the gorgeous seam binding.

I LOVE combining different elements together like this and encourage those of you who subscribe to multiple Tres Jolie kits to just play when your goodies arrive – don’t be afraid to mix and match – there’s so much in each kit to play with.

I’ve linked a video below that shows this particular box in detail as well as a tutorial for those of you who would like to give this project a try. Once you make one you’ll be hooked! These little boxes are fun and addicting. You can make them as a gift, or even a card/gift combo – or turn it into a 3-D album.  There are so many possibilities.

The video is about 20 minutes long but goes by pretty quickly. It’s a little choppy in spots because it’s my first one in about 2 years but you will get the gist of what to do – and I’ve included a cutting guide in the description box.

Hope you enjoy! Please be sure to tag us on Instagram if you create any of the projects we feature, and subscribe to our newsletter so you’re always up to date with what’s happening with our club!

Last-Minute Father’s Day Gift Idea

Hello everyone! I’m Cris, a new Tres Jolie design team member and for my first official post I thought I would present a quick, simple, last-minute Father’s Day gift idea.  I was inspired to do this project when I found a plain white frame while rummaging through my closets. I decided to alter it using   elements from the June Scrapbooking and Mixed Media kits.

This is a photo of my “son-in-love”, Matt, and his son (my grandson), Andrew. I took this photo a few days after Drew came home  from the hospital; isn’t it so sweet? It’s definitely one of my favorites! Matt loves receiving handmade gifts (bless his heart!), so I’m excited to give this to him for his first Father’s Day tomorrow (along with a cheesy t-shirt, an even cheesier mug, and a photo collage of him and baby). So, if you have a frame laying around go grab it and give this project a go! Here’s how:

  1. Trace the mat that is included with the frame onto patterned paper, trim out and adhere. Set this aside while you work on the frame.
  2. Lightly sand the frame – I used a regular nail file/emery board. You want to do a LIGHT sand. The goal is to lightly strip off the glossy finish in order to give your paint some “tooth”.  Wipe the frame down with a slightly damp cloth to remove all the sanding particles. Make sure your workspace is cleared of all particles before continuing to the next step.
  3. Add your paint – I used the Cosmic Shimmer Crackle Paste that was included in the June Mixed Media kit. I lightly applied two coats back-to-back. This is crackle paste so the thicker you apply it the more “crackle” you will see. I didn’t necessarily want a deep crackle finish, so I was fine with two light coats.  The result was a distressed look with very little crackle. Decide which finish you prefer before applying. Dry completely before continuing. Quick tip: Do your painting over parchment or wax paper if you don’t have a surface that is suitable for mixed media work.
  4. Paint your flowers: I never know how many I will use so I just grabbed a handful in varying sizes and dry-brushed them with white gesso. Set aside.
  5. Cut a portion of the Scrapaholics Junkyard chipboard and dry brush with white gesso. Set aside.
  6. Time to pull it all together and decorate. This is the fun part!  First, I positioned and glued down two of the 49&Market stitched frames. Next I adhered the gessoed Scrapoholics Junkyard chipboard in between the frames. Then (and this is optional!) I layered cheesecloth and thin white thread over the frames and chipboard. Use about 2 feet of thread and just circle it over your piece, letting it fall freely.  I then added the beautiful Darice flowers and tucked in one of the  Ideology clock pieces.   Lastly, I used those fun Tim Holtz typewriter pieces to spell out “dad” (I gessoed these as well and used an upside-down “P” for the last “d”) and VOILA…you’re done!

Easy peasy, right?  I hope you give this fun project a try, especially if you are looking for a quick last-minute gift idea. “I Let Music Take Me Where My Heart Wants To Go” Altered Envelope

Hello crafty friends!! This week I am back to share with you this project using the June Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie!

I have created a photo process video to share how I went about creating this beautiful envelope!

This kit comes with a beautiful copper envelope that you can either leave as is or alter it like I did. It makes a stunning home decor piece for your home or as a gift!

This was my 1st time using the Cosmic Shimmer products which were wonderful and easy to create with! Plus I still have a lot of left over product to create more mixed media projects or however else I choose to use them as well as having the Darice white flowers, a chalk board piece and Lindy’s Stamp Gang magicals, left from the kit that I didn’t use to create another fun project!

Here is my process video:

I hope that you like what I created using this month’s mixed media kit! I will be back next week with another project using the Cards, Tags, & more kit!! Until then you can visit the Tres Jolie Blog to check out the rest of the Tres Jolie Designers and their wonderful projects!!

Don’t forget that Kim is having a contest for the 2 year anniversary going on this month! Details here

Mixed Media Mini Floral Canvas

Happy hump day y’all!!  Today I’m brining you a happy little mini canvas filled with vivid color and fun flowers.

This kit just made me happy!  I snuck in a couple of the big flowers from the scrapbook kit to add some variation but you could easily just use a combination of the flowers included in the mixed media kit.  I also added a pearl cross I had in my junk stash, you could use a recycled piece of jewelry for this, an old brooch, button or charm.

I started by rubbing the entire mini canvas (also from my art stash) with the Cosmic Shimmer Metallic Gilding Polish and then brushed it with the crackle paste and allowed it to dry.  You can speed this up with a heat tool.

Then I rubbed the larger flowers with the metallic gilding polish and then brushed the centers of the flowers with some of the Lindys magicals mixed with a bit of water.  I used the Lindy’s Magicals and water on the smaller flowers, this gave it bright, vivid color on the unprepared flower petals.

I then rubbed the entire canvas with some gold wax by Finnabar.  I also rubbed the flowers with a bit of it as well to give them a bit of extra shimmer.  Finally I glued it all together.

Take a peek at my process video to see how it all came together!

I hope you love it as much as I do!

Vintage Garden District Handmade Cards

Hello crafty friends! I’m excited to share my first project for this month using the June Cards, Tags, & More kit from Tres Jolie! The paper from the kit this month is from Simple Stories Vintage Garden District! The colors on this paper are beautiful and so I decided to create a couple of cards .

These cards measure 4 1/4 X 5 1/2 , I used some pink card stock for the base of the cards from the kit. I then cut some of the green paper that has a different pattern from the kit as well to start my layers. I selected the papers from the Simple Stories Vintage Garden District paper pad, on one of the cards I tore the paper and adhered it in two different corners of the base. I then added some white cheese cloth then cutting, distressing the edges with the distress tool then adhering one of the cut outs with the sentiment “Live, Love, Laugh” . I also made a small flower cluster on the bottom of the card using the yellow and white flowers from the kit along with some other small paper flowers in between as well. Of course adding some cheese cloth in between the cluster. Then added some small white pearls to the flowers too! Lastly on this card I added some Liquid pearls to the top right corner.

On the 2nd card I did the same for this base as I used for the 1st one. I did however use the flip side of the green card stock than what I had used for the first one which is a little lighter. I then picked out another paper from the paper pad, distressing the edges with the distress tool and also creating some wrinkles on some areas of the paper. I then cut and adhered one of the cut outs which said ” You are the bestest”. I picked one of the papers from the paper pad which was dark green with a cute butterfly on it, I cut it to make a small banner piece and then adhering some of the white cotton lace and a white flower from one of the other kits.

These cards were very simple to create! I will be creating more once I finish with the other projects . Of course I will be sharing it here with you all! I hope this inspires you to create some any occasion cards for those special moments! This kit is super cute and colorful.  So stay tuned friends for more projects! I’ll be back! Until then you can check out the rest of the design teams great projects!! Also don’t forget to enter the monthly sketch challenge!! See Ya!

Mixed Media Mail Box

Hey y’all!  I hope this week is finding y’all well!  Today I’m diving head first into this beautiful mixed media kit Kim cooked up for us for June!

I’ll give you a quick overview but I also prepared a little process video to show you how it all came together.  I started out by rubbing the entire metal envelope with the Metallic Gilding Polish by Creative Expressions.  Once that dried I applied some white crackle paste by Phill Martin from a previous month’s kit and allowed it to crackle.  I then rubbed some gold wax  by Finnabar (from a previous month’s) kit along the edges and glued all my flowers on, rubbing more gold wax on them as well.  Finally I clipped one of the mini chalk board clips on and finished it off with some lace to hang it from.

Here is a link to the process video!  Enjoy!

“Why” Layout with Rae

Happy Sunday, everyone!

By now you’ve probably seen that the June scrapbook kit features the gorgeously vintage collection “In the Past”  from AB Studio.  This is the second layout I’ve made with the kit so far:
I started out with adding some inking and stenciling to my background paper.  I used some stitch line stamps with black archival ink.  I made two “rows” or layers of the framing.  Next, I used some grey distress ink and a stencil that would peek out from the design cluster, as well as the corners of the page.

AB Studio always has amazing images to cut out- I used a lot of the cut outs as layers behind my photo, as well as the 49 and Market stitched frames from the kit.  The crotched lace is also from the kit: I lightly inked the lace and used a file to tatter the edges for a distressed look. (The tiny clips are from my stash: Tim Holtz.)
In the closeup above you can see the Bottle Cap letters that I used for the title: they were very bold, so I toned down the painted part by adding some brown distress oxide ink, then wiping it with a paper towel.

You can also see the music notes chipboard- only one came in the kit, but I had two, and thought it would be nice to use them both.  I added some Lindy’s Stamp Gang embossing powder that we received from a kit a couple of months ago.
In the flower clusters, I used flowers from the kit, but wanted to add some smaller flowers as well so I used some Prima flowers from a past kit to compliment this month’s flowers.  I also added some jewel flowers from my stash. (Tim Holtz Assemblage jewelry)  I also added some vine die cuts using another piece of paper from the kit.  I also added two of the metal clocks from the kit as well.

May Mood Board Challenge By Jeanne

Hello crafty friends!! TGIF right?!?! I hope that you all have a wonderful week and have a better weekend! This week I wanted to create something for this month’s mood board challenge for Tres Jolie.

The moment I seen this mood board I knew exactly what products I would be using! Here is what I came up with! I hope you like it!!

I created this layout for this month’s Mood Board Challenge using a paper collection from Pink Paislee called Auburn Lane  . I thought this collection was perfect for this month’s mood board. I did think of another collection too but it was more of a vintage look and I didn’t have 12×12 sheets for a layout.

I layered different papers as well as tore some up & inked all of the edges with Tim Holtz Frayed Burlap Distress Ink. I then mixed up some of the Finnabair Texture Powder from on of our last kits with some of the 13@arts white gesso and applied to to the Finnabair Stencil from another of the Tres Jolie Kits. Stenciled a few areas then added some Prima Bloom Spray in Precious Stone color which to me gives off a dark green shimmer and sprayed some water to get the color to run in other areas. I must say it did end up more than what I wanted but no worries, I still managed to save it!

I then began embellishing using some fussy cut flowers I cut from the collection as well as flowers from another Tres Jolie kit. I also used some Lindy’s embossing powder, chipboard windows, metal clock piece, a 49& Market flower vine, all from past kits as well. I added some stickers images inside the windows. I also added some lace and cheese cloth and a button on the clock piece as well.

I do hope that you like what I created this month for the Mood Board challenge! Don’t forget to join!! I will be back next week with my sketch board challenge entry! See ya then!! Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend!!

“Always” Layout with Rae

Happy Sunday, craft people!

Today I’m sharing another layout I made using the May scrapbooking kit.

This Hazy Street collection by Craft o’Clock is so beautiful, and this was my favorite piece of paper from the collection.

I started out by adding some stenciling using an older damask stencil and some white crackle paste.  Once dry, I randomly sprayed some Nuvo Mica Mist in Pampas Grass across the page for a subtle effect. In the close up below, you can see some of the spray, but it really does flawlessly blend in with the design of the paper.  I also used that spray on the title, which is a piece of chipboard from my stash that I inked black and then sprayed the Nuvo spray again. (And, if you look really close, you can see some of the spray on the Little Birdie butterfly!)In this closeup below, you can see more of the stenciling, and the piece of Scrapaholics chipboard from the kit.  I painted that thickly with chalk paste for texture, then sprayed it again with my new favorite Nuvo blue-green spray, let it dry, then I scraped a black pigment ink pad over the chipboard to highlight the texture. I also used the same media on the Melissa Frances resin piece with the bee.  You can also see some of the curled green pieces of paper under the 49 and Market flowers.  I don’t usually use those piece that come in the 49 and Market flower packs, but I thought it was time to give them a try!

And, in this closeup, you can see I went a bit wild with all the flowers and embellishments in this huge cluster.

The printed chipboard and the tags are from the Hazy Street collection.  The ivory flowers are from my stash, as well as the small blue doily.

I hope you enjoyed taking a look at my project!  Be sure to check back on the blog as we continue to share our May projects with you! 🙂

I also used some rub ons from 7 Gypsies, “Hello” wax stamp, & the beautiful chipboard frames from the kit!
