“Own Your Dreams” Canvas with Rae

Happy Monday!

We’ve seen some gorgeous projects this month from our design team this month, and today I’m sharing my canvas I made using the mixed media kit:

I recently bought a couple of the Ranger Distress Oxide sprays, and I am HOOKED!  The technique possibilities are endless, but so far, what I really like to use them on are dark surfaces.  Here’s the result of adding the sprays to a canvas primed with black gesso:

I started out by adding stenciling with crackle paste to the entire canvas in the kit.  Once dry, I added a smaller canvas somewhat centered, and added some crackle paste to this one as well.  I used a few things from my stash to complete the design, but I chose my focal point to be the image of the lady from the Prima Marketing mould set.  I added an older Prima resin oval frame to the smaller canvas to “house” the focal point.  I found some chipboard to add that I thought would make nice pieces to showcase the flowers made with the modeling material. Once the placement was complete, I painted the entire canvas with black gesso.  Here’s a closeup that shows the stenciling and finish details:

Once dry,  I added the Ranger Distress Oxide Sprays. I started out with Antique Linen because it was the lightest if the colors.  While still damp, I added the Bundled Sage spray, then dried those colors with a heat gun.  Next I added more of the Bundled Sage spray, then added a lot of Faded Jeans spray. Then, I added a few sprays of Speckled Egg spray (from my stash), then set aside to dry.The next day, I rubbed the canvas with a paper towel- the sprays were dried, and the finish is kind of powdery, so rubbing it revealed some of the black gesso under the sprays. I added some wax in white gold from my stash, then added some of the gold Lindy’s mica powder to the bottom canvas, and random other places.  I added clear glass beads with gloss gel surrounding the “lady,” and a Tim Holtz title from my stash that I distressed a bit, inked blue, and glued down.

Mixed Media Monday

Hey everyone, Kim here. I’m serving up some mixed media madness today, working with the August 2020 Mixed Media kit.

Here is the Mixed Media kit if you haven’t already seen it:

Here is the project I created with the kit:

How about some close-ups:

I used the mould from the kit and a mould from my stash to create the center piece. The background was created with a stencil and some modeling paste, then everything was covered in 2 layers of black gesso.

Once the gesso was dry,  I layered the distress oxide sprays starting with lightest to darkest. Once I sprayed the oxide spray, I then misted it with water to deepen the oxide effect.

After I was happy with the distress oxide effects. I used the magicals in the kit and mixed it with a bit of water to create a paste. I took my finger and rubbed it on the high points of the moulds.

Once it was done, I realized it needed a little something more. I pulled out the black ink and added the splatters. I think that finished it off perfectly.

Mixed Media “Trees by Streams of Water”

Happy Wednesday y’all!!  Michelle here, giving you a fun dose of mixed media today!!

Today I’m playing with the awesome Redesign Modeling Material by Redesign by Prima, Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Spray by Ranger & Lindys Magical metallic powder that were in the August mixed media kit.  I also picked out a stamp I liked with a simple, deep cut design to use that would make a good impression.

I started out by taking a good portion of the modeling material and pressing it flat on to a nonstick surface that I knew it would release easily from.  Then  I firmly stamped the rubber stamp into the modeling material.

I allowed the modeling material to dry, you can speed this up a bit with a heat gun but you may need to allow it to dry a few hours to overnight.

Next I sprayed the piece well with the “bundled sage” Distress Oxide Spray and lightly blotted the excess to create a unique effect.

Finally I applied a bit of water to my work surface and then began to dip my wet paint brush in the Lindy’s Magicals gold metallic powder, and then brushing along the edges and high spots of my stamped modeling material …rewetting my brush as needed.

I applied my finished piece on to a prepared mixed media canvas board.

If you would like to recreate the look of this board, I simply applied some texture medium that had a lot of grit to it and added some extra texture pebbles to the edges then painted the entire board black.  After it was dry I brushed on some of the gold Lindy’s magicals kinda like a rich water color, leaving it almost powdery in some spots for extra grit.  I then applied some light sage green acrylic paint to the raised textured areas and tucked some natural moss under my adhered stamped modeling material piece.

I’m pretty smitten with it and I hope you are too!  Hopefully this helps you think a bit out the box on how you can use the mediums included in this month’s amazing mixed media kit!!

Tres Jolie Kit Club–August 2020 Mixed Media Kit–*Follow Along With Us*

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog!

Today I’m bringing you my “Follow Along With Us” project for the month using the August Mixed Media Kit. Now, I’m not going to lie, this project fought back! This was just one of those times that I was having problems getting my hands to do what my brain was picturing. As you’ll discover in the video, in the end I had to do a voice-over to explain what I did, but I’m rather pleased with the end result!

The stems are actually a rather happy accident. I didn’t originally plan for them to be “broken,” but when they came apart I realized I rather liked the look. Now, as I’ll also note in the video, I would paint the “Bayou Boogie Gold” Magical Powder on my mushrooms and stems before adding them to the canvas. If you do (and don’t add the “Antique Linen” first) they will match the flowers. If you do it the same way I did in the video then your mushrooms will look like mine here. When I was working on it I hadn’t planned to have them gold originally, but after I got them glued down I decided to make them pop off the canvas more! (Have I mentioned this project just wanted to fight me every step of the way? LOL!)

Check out my video and follow along!

You don’t need a mould to use modeling material! I formed my stems and mushrooms by hand! I didn’t try to make them the same or perfect, I just played around with the modeling material until I liked what I made. (Which isn’t in the video due to this project fighting me the whole time! If I remember correctly, I thought my camera was running, but I was mistaken. Sorry!!)

At some point in time, although I can’t say when exactly after everything this project put me through, I decided to cluster all the flowers from the mould together where the mushroom stems intersected!

Even though the acrylic sealer had an effect on the Oxide Spray, I can tell you that had not happened to me before, so I am thinking I should have set it aside longer to dry. I’m not disappointed, just surprised. And sometimes surprises work out!

I hope you enjoyed this project and that it gave you an idea or two about how to use the items found in this month’s Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie! Thank you for joining us and I’ll see you again soon!

August 2020 Mixed Media Kit

In addition to items from this month’s mixed media kit (from previous Tres Jolie kits), I used:

*Little Birdie Black Gesso, Liquitex Matte Super Heavy Gel, Mod Podge Matte Acrylic Sealer

Cosmic Gypsy Board

Hey y’all!  It’s Michelle here today and I have channeled my inner gypsy girl to give you a fun, easy, artsy and functional project that you can easily do with your Tres Jolie Mixed Media August kit right out of the box!

I call this my cosmic gypsy board and you can use it as a chalkboard, menu board, grocery list, agenda, quote board, etc!!

I started off by making the clay pieces first so they could air dry (you can speed it up a bit with a heat gun but overnight air dry is best).  To make these pieces use the Prima Modeling Material pressed into the Prima Mould and release it immediately to air dry before painting with a black gesso from a previous kit (you could also use black acrylic) and then spraying with the sage colored Distress Oxide Spray.  For the scrolls you make them the same way with the modeling material in the mould and after dried apply black gesso but for these I applied a gold wash made from the Lindys Magical powder and water to make a metallic watercolor.

Next paint the entire canvas with black gesso (or black acrylic) and allow to dry.  I then taped off the center of the canvas to form a frame around the outside.  Then spray the Distress Oxide Sprays by Ranger along the exposed border.  I also mixed in a bit of the alcohol inks from last month’s kit and allowed the inks and colors to mix as I tilted the canvas around.  You can aid the mixing process as well as the drying process by using a heat gun.  I also painted a gold border around the black chalkboard area with the gold metallic watercolor paint I created with the Lindy’s Magical gold powder.

Finally I glued the clay pieces down to the canvas.

I hope you enjoyed this fun little versatile project!  Check out my process video to see it all coming together!

Thanks for stopping by!  Y’all have a beautiful day!

“Eyes Wide Shut” Canvas Journal

Hello friends,

Happy Saturday to you! I’m excited to share a fun journal I created with the July Cards, Tags & More kit, which features the stunning “Imagine” collection by Stamperia…

The base of my project is a Tim Holtz canvas journal (included your kit!). I started by collaging a piece of vintage music sheet from the kit, with a torn piece of paper from the Stamperia collection.  I fussy cut this gorgeous female image from the collection for the cover,  as well as a few flowers from the Mixed Media kit. I love combining elements from all 3 kits in my projects; it’s easy to do because they all coordinate so well together. This entire project is just a lot of collaging and layering. The first spread features book pages, ephemera and flowers from the kit. I also used a few flowers from our June Scrapbooking kit and a butterfly I found in my stash.

The doily flips down to reveal two tags from the collection. I used Fabri-Tac and soft gel medium as adhesives. I also dry-brushed white gesso on each page.  The second spread is my favorite, and inspired the journal’s name. I love that image on the right – the woman’s eyes are closed as if she’s dreaming or in deep contemplation. I was taken with how calm and content she looks.

I adhered the Dream sentiment on the bottom because I think her expression is symbolic of the power we have when we close our eyes; We have within us the ability to intentionally pull ourselves away from any stressful situation by simply closing our eyes. We also have the ability to dream, contemplate, meditate, pray and just “be”. We can escape or choose to stay focused. I think that’s an awesome power and why I titled the journal “Eyes Wide Shut”.For the next spread I adhered one of the beautiful lace pieces Kim provides in our kits on the left page and created a simple collage around it. The opposite page consists of collaged paper pieces and one of the fun dress images from the Stamperia collection.

The rest of the journal consists of collaged paper pieces adhered with Fabri-Tac and sealed with soft matte gel. I also randomly stamped in sepia ink  throughout. I used one of the 49& Market stitched frames from and florals from the Scrapbooking kit on the following spread. This is the last spread the journal and a very special one because my design teammate Jeanne, who also helped create this kit,  provided the gorgeous decoupaged glassine bag on the left filled with lots of goodies for us to use on our projects. Thank you Jeanne!

Thank you for visiting today. I hope you enjoyed my project and will take minute to check out the amazing work by our other designers. Seriously these girls knock it out of the park every month and I am honored beyond words to be working alongside them. Junk Journal Cover created with the July Cards, Tags and More Kit

Hey guys, Kim here. Today I have my junk journal cover  I created using the July 2020 cards, tags and more kit. This is a a different kinda kit for us. If you haven’t seen it, here it is:

This was a really fun kit to work with and DT member Jeanne helped put it together. It’s filled with coffee dyed papers and lots of shabby chic and vintage ephemera.

Here is my journal cover:

I used the papers in the kit to make my cover large by gluing it to the canvas page. Then I just layered it full of goodies.

How about some close-ups:

Here is a good look at the layers. You can see the paper, some of the book page, the frame and a piece of the lace doily. I inked the edges of everything before I adhered it. The flower is from last months scrapbook kit.

More layers. You can see the tag and train ticket. The gold textured tag is from my stash. Again, everything got inked along the edges.

This is the finished product. This was a pretty quick project to create. I just love how the cover turned out. I just need to finish the inside of it.

Thanks for stopping by.

May Sketch Challenge Layout By Jeanne

Hello friends!! Today I am sharing my Sketch Challenge for this month! I love creating from the ideas that Kim puts together, they are so much fun to do!

For my project I started by adding some Gold pigment ink onto the edges of the 12X12 paper that I used, which was from one of my favorite collections from Prima Marketing  “Salvage District” . I also stamped some roses using the same ink around my page.  Once it dried I backed up my layout onto a 12×12 chipboard sheet. I then added some Lindy’s Stamp Gang T-Bird Turquoise Flat Spray Lindy’s Stamp Gang T-Bird Turquoise Spray

I used a paint brush to apply this color since I didn’t want it too bright. I then added other papers from the collection where my photo mat will be. I added some Prima Marketing flowers & leaves, I also added some of Wooden embellishments from the Salvage District collection as well as some flat back pearls. Lastly adding some black flourish die cuts I had left from another project .

I hope that you will join in to this challenge! There is still time and make sure you join and post to the Tres Jolie Kit Club Page on Facebook ! All links are below!

See ya next time!!

Mixed Media Gears Canvas

Happy Hump Day Y’all!!  I hope this post finds you well and y’all have been crafting and quarantining!  Today I’m sharing a mixed media canvas I made with my Mixed Media Kit this month

Can we take a moment to talk about these gears?  Whoa.  I mean, Amaz.  Yeah.  Anyway.

I started out by giving everything a good coat of black gesso.  Since I wanted this canvas to be full of texture and grit and a bit of glitz, I also added some texture yumminess from my art stash but you can absolutely pull this off with what you have in the kit.  You could possibly mix a bit of texture powder from last month’s kit in with the black gesso (or even a little sand) and get a similar grit.

I also sprinkled some of the glass glitter from last month’s kit as well.

I also used the metallic teal and gold to do some great aging effects on the gears.  It gave them the perfect patina.

I pressed the gears down into the wet texture paste and that is how I adhered them down to my canvas.

Using a pallet knife I applied more of the gold metallic paint across the canvas.  I just love the artsy effect it gave the piece.

Here is a short process video for you to see the piece in action!

I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at this process and found it inspiring it to go and make something beautiful today!
