Explosion Box With a Twist

Hello everyone! This is Cris and today I’d like to share a fun project with you, but first I have a confession…I’m OBSESSED with boxes! I love to make them, alter them, collect them…and I have even more fun making little books to store in them.  So of course you know sooner or later I’d share my obsession as a DT project.  This fun little gem here is what I refer to as an “Explosion Box With a Twist”; when you lift the lid you’ll find more boxes within the box! It’s a dream if you share my obsession…hahaha! It’s also very simple  to create and not too time consuming.

The  Tres Jolie kits pair perfectly with this project because they are so versatile and work seamlessly together. For example, on the box lid shown here I used elements from all three of our June kits…

The pretty butterflies are from the Cards, Tags & More kit, as are the crochet lace, tag (behind the clock face), cut-out arrow, clock face, leaves, and cute birdie on the upper right. The Darice flowers and stunning AB Studio “In the Past”papers are from the Scrapbooking kit, and the chalkboard and chipboard pieces are from the Mixed Media kit. I even used some of the cool packaging Kim includes in our kit boxes.  The only element in the project that was from my stash is the gorgeous seam binding.

I LOVE combining different elements together like this and encourage those of you who subscribe to multiple Tres Jolie kits to just play when your goodies arrive – don’t be afraid to mix and match – there’s so much in each kit to play with.

I’ve linked a video below that shows this particular box in detail as well as a tutorial for those of you who would like to give this project a try. Once you make one you’ll be hooked! These little boxes are fun and addicting. You can make them as a gift, or even a card/gift combo – or turn it into a 3-D album.  There are so many possibilities.

The video is about 20 minutes long but goes by pretty quickly. It’s a little choppy in spots because it’s my first one in about 2 years but you will get the gist of what to do – and I’ve included a cutting guide in the description box.

Hope you enjoy! Please be sure to tag us on Instagram if you create any of the projects we feature, and subscribe to our newsletter so you’re always up to date with what’s happening with our club!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Simple , Unique But Beautiful Layout

Hello crafty friends! This week I am back sharing a layout where I have created my own background design for my layout!

I really loved creating this layout using this month’s Cards, Tags & More Kit

You can view a quick process video of how I created this using a few, simple supplies that you most likely have in your crafty stash!!

I began by adhering a 12×12 sheet of light yellow card stock from American Crafts , onto a 12×12 white chipboard sheet. I then trimmed a sheet of white card stock to that yellow one but before adhering it I went along the edges using some of the Tonic Studios Embellishment Nuvo mousse   in Custard cream. I then applied some 13@arts White Gesso from a previous kit onto areas of the card stock for when I add some colors using a shimmer spray from Recollections Simply Pastel Yellow and I also added some Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Spun Sugar. I heat dried it then added some white cheese cloth for some added dimension.

I then added some of the lace from the kit and then I took a couple of sheets from the Simple Stories Vintage Garden District Paper Pad from the kit and tore some of pieces of paper to add onto the edges mainly . Before adhering the torn paper to the layout I went over the edges using one of my favorite products, the Tonic Studios Nuvo Embellishment Mousse in Custard Cream color.

I want the frames from the collection to be my main focus on my layout.  Then on back of the frames I had added some light pink card stock from the kit and some pop dots which made it easier for me to add the photos of my grand daughters since I hadn’t printed them and added them right away to my layout.

So that was basically a quick over view of my project! I hope that you liked what I came up with using this month’s kit and also please don’t forget that you still have time to enter the 2 year anniversary challenge going on this month for Tres Jolie Kits!!

Talk to you all soon!! Hope u have a great weekend!!

Hugs,

Jeanne

Welcoming a new Designer

Hi everyone, Kim here. Join me today in welcoming a new designer to our team. Although you have seen some of her designs, she is officially starting with the July kits. Without further ado, I introduce to you…

Cristina Cunningham

Hi, I’m Cristina. I live in NY and am a mom of two 20-somethings and a new grandma to my sweet
Andrew. I’ve been crafting in one way or another since college, but discovered scrapbooking when my oldest was born and my love for papercrafts grew from there. My style is very shabby and feminine. My favorite projects revolve around memory keeping, but I also enjoy making junk journals, cards and altered projects. In my spare time you can find me at the beach catching a cool sunset or at the opera. I’m a former classical pianist and still enjoy going to a concert whenever I can.

Let’s give Cris a warm welcome. I am sure you will love seeing what she creates using our kits. So make sure you are subscribed to our blog, social media platforms and Youtube channel.

Shabby Little Mini Book

Happy Wednesday y’all!!

Now y’all know I like to mix things up a bit!  LOL!  I normally get the mixed media kit but this month I got both the mixed media kit and the scrapbook kit, so this little mini is made with this month’s scrapbook kit.

When I opened up that scrapbook kit and saw those cute stitched frames by 49 & Market I knew I was going to be making this mini!  And the cardstock by AB Studio was just perfectly designed to make these little pages…these pages were all cut from one sheet of cardstock!

I knew they would be perfect to frame up those lovely designs on the AB Studio cardstock!  For this I just cut the cardstock to fit the frames and glued them to the back side of the frames.  I then cut a small strip of scrap card stock and taped it to the back left of each “page” to help form more of an area that could but used as a spine.  More on how I used that additional edge in a bit.

Next I turned my attention to the cover, I added a part of the chipboard chain and gears.  I just cut a portion of the design and I painted it with some of the white crackle paste I had sitting on my desk from the mixed media kit.  Although it didn’t really crackle since I wan’t using it in the way crackle paste should be used to crackle properly, I do like how it looks.  You could absolutely just use whatever white paint you have.  I also inked it with a brown ink pad along the edges before glueing it down.

Here you can see that additional scrap cardstock I used to create a bit of a spine.  I used my standard size hole punch to punch two holes in it (all the way through each sheet) and ran the lace through to form the binding of the book, tying it in the front of the book.

I used the same white crackle paste from the mixed media kit to paint the Darice flowers and sprinkled some gold glitter from one of my previous kits on them.  I also tucked on the the Tim Holtz Timepiece watch faces in there as well after giving it a quick wipe with some white paint.

As you can see the book is not filled just yet, I can’t decide how I want to use it but I couldn’t let the opportunity pass to create it and now it’s made and ready to fill!  It will be a great gift or quick art journal when the mood strikes me!

Thanks for stoping by today!

Tres Jolie Kit Club-June 2020 Mixed Media Kit-Altered Box

Hey, all! Welcome back to the Tres Jolie blog!

Today I’m bringing you my third Mixed Media Kit project of June, an altered box. I’ve been keeping this box around since I ate the candy that was in it back in December. I knew I’d eventually find a way I wanted to use it!

DSC_0001-FRAMED

It took me building up a few layers of mediums to get the look I wanted, check out the video below to see how it all (finally!) came together.

DSC_0005-FRAMED DSC_0006-FRAMED

To the lid of the box, I added some ReneaBouquets Beautiful Board & “Candy” (flatbacks), cabochons, resin flowers from my stash, and some of the glass glitter that had come in the April 2020 Mixed Media Kit. For the roses, I used Lindy’s Magical Powder to give them their color, and the Gilding Polish on the cabochons.

DSC_0009-FRAMED

You can see how I made a double crackle effect by layering some Tim Holtz “Crazing” Distress Medium (from my stash) on top of the Cosmic Shimmer Crackle Paste from this month’s kit. Then, to really bring out the “Crazing” cracks, I rubbed in some of the Cosmic Shimmer Metallic Gilding Polish from the kit.

I hope you enjoyed this project, and that it gave you some ideas of what the mediums can do that came with this month’s kit! I’ll see you again in July!

Simple Vintage Garden District Cards with Rae

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Have you seen our June card kit this month? It features the Simple Stories Simple Vintage Garden District papers.  The vintage feel of this papers paired with he bright colors make this collection so fun to play with.  Check out the kit here:

The rest of the design team has been posting some amazing projects made with this kit, and today I’m going to show you 4 simple cards that I came up with.  First up is my “Dream” card:

I used a faux stitching technique on the pink gingham paper, and on the teal doily.  I cut that using a small doily die.  I cut one of the clothesline stickers to fit the card and added a couple of other small stickers from the kit.  I inked the Scrapaholic chipboard swirls and then ticked them under some flowers- the small pink ones are from my stash. I traced a lot of the elements with a black pen for added interest.

Next up is another “Dream” card:

I started out by cutting one of the frames that had room for two pictures in half.  I added one of the sentiment cut out cards to the frame for the base of my design.  I used the same design features as the other “dream” card using black accents.

“Thinking of You” Card:

This is a card with lots of layers!  I cut some banners for the layers under the sentiment card that I put in another one of the frames that came in the kit and added a sentiment card to.  I cut and distressed some of the crotchet trim, then tucked some pieces in between the layers.  I also added two of the heart stickers to the top and a couple of whitewashed brads from my stash.  I painted the chipboard swirls white, then added some green chalk ink.

“Today is the Day” Card:

This is my favorite of all the cards I made with this kit.  I started out by cutting a couple of layeres for the background and distressed them.  I added some print stenciling  with white chalk paste.  The green circle is a die cut from the green paper in the kit.  I added more of the distressed crotchet trim and added the lovely Darice yellow roses and pink roses from my stash.

And here they all are again:

Last-Minute Father’s Day Gift Idea

Hello everyone! I’m Cris, a new Tres Jolie design team member and for my first official post I thought I would present a quick, simple, last-minute Father’s Day gift idea.  I was inspired to do this project when I found a plain white frame while rummaging through my closets. I decided to alter it using   elements from the June Scrapbooking and Mixed Media kits.

This is a photo of my “son-in-love”, Matt, and his son (my grandson), Andrew. I took this photo a few days after Drew came home  from the hospital; isn’t it so sweet? It’s definitely one of my favorites! Matt loves receiving handmade gifts (bless his heart!), so I’m excited to give this to him for his first Father’s Day tomorrow (along with a cheesy t-shirt, an even cheesier mug, and a photo collage of him and baby). So, if you have a frame laying around go grab it and give this project a go! Here’s how:

  1. Trace the mat that is included with the frame onto patterned paper, trim out and adhere. Set this aside while you work on the frame.
  2. Lightly sand the frame – I used a regular nail file/emery board. You want to do a LIGHT sand. The goal is to lightly strip off the glossy finish in order to give your paint some “tooth”.  Wipe the frame down with a slightly damp cloth to remove all the sanding particles. Make sure your workspace is cleared of all particles before continuing to the next step.
  3. Add your paint – I used the Cosmic Shimmer Crackle Paste that was included in the June Mixed Media kit. I lightly applied two coats back-to-back. This is crackle paste so the thicker you apply it the more “crackle” you will see. I didn’t necessarily want a deep crackle finish, so I was fine with two light coats.  The result was a distressed look with very little crackle. Decide which finish you prefer before applying. Dry completely before continuing. Quick tip: Do your painting over parchment or wax paper if you don’t have a surface that is suitable for mixed media work.
  4. Paint your flowers: I never know how many I will use so I just grabbed a handful in varying sizes and dry-brushed them with white gesso. Set aside.
  5. Cut a portion of the Scrapaholics Junkyard chipboard and dry brush with white gesso. Set aside.
  6. Time to pull it all together and decorate. This is the fun part!  First, I positioned and glued down two of the 49&Market stitched frames. Next I adhered the gessoed Scrapoholics Junkyard chipboard in between the frames. Then (and this is optional!) I layered cheesecloth and thin white thread over the frames and chipboard. Use about 2 feet of thread and just circle it over your piece, letting it fall freely.  I then added the beautiful Darice flowers and tucked in one of the  Ideology clock pieces.   Lastly, I used those fun Tim Holtz typewriter pieces to spell out “dad” (I gessoed these as well and used an upside-down “P” for the last “d”) and VOILA…you’re done!

Easy peasy, right?  I hope you give this fun project a try, especially if you are looking for a quick last-minute gift idea. “I Let Music Take Me Where My Heart Wants To Go” Altered Envelope

Hello crafty friends!! This week I am back to share with you this project using the June Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie!

I have created a photo process video to share how I went about creating this beautiful envelope!

This kit comes with a beautiful copper envelope that you can either leave as is or alter it like I did. It makes a stunning home decor piece for your home or as a gift!

This was my 1st time using the Cosmic Shimmer products which were wonderful and easy to create with! Plus I still have a lot of left over product to create more mixed media projects or however else I choose to use them as well as having the Darice white flowers, a chalk board piece and Lindy’s Stamp Gang magicals, left from the kit that I didn’t use to create another fun project!

Here is my process video:

I hope that you like what I created using this month’s mixed media kit! I will be back next week with another project using the Cards, Tags, & more kit!! Until then you can visit the Tres Jolie Blog to check out the rest of the Tres Jolie Designers and their wonderful projects!!

Don’t forget that Kim is having a contest for the 2 year anniversary going on this month! Details here

See ya next week!!

Mixed Media Mini Floral Canvas

Happy hump day y’all!!  Today I’m brining you a happy little mini canvas filled with vivid color and fun flowers.

This kit just made me happy!  I snuck in a couple of the big flowers from the scrapbook kit to add some variation but you could easily just use a combination of the flowers included in the mixed media kit.  I also added a pearl cross I had in my junk stash, you could use a recycled piece of jewelry for this, an old brooch, button or charm.

I started by rubbing the entire mini canvas (also from my art stash) with the Cosmic Shimmer Metallic Gilding Polish and then brushed it with the crackle paste and allowed it to dry.  You can speed this up with a heat tool.

Then I rubbed the larger flowers with the metallic gilding polish and then brushed the centers of the flowers with some of the Lindys magicals mixed with a bit of water.  I used the Lindy’s Magicals and water on the smaller flowers, this gave it bright, vivid color on the unprepared flower petals.

I then rubbed the entire canvas with some gold wax by Finnabar.  I also rubbed the flowers with a bit of it as well to give them a bit of extra shimmer.  Finally I glued it all together.

Take a peek at my process video to see how it all came together!

I hope you love it as much as I do!
