‘Roses’ canvas by Ginny

Welcome to my second project of the month for Tres Jolie October Kit.

Today I thought I would share with you my Mixed Media Kit Project.

This month we had a lovely large square canvas and the gorgeous watercolours from Prima. What a treat to be able to create with these!

Here is the Mixed Media Kit

And so lets look at a few photos of how I created this canvas.

I only used a limited amount of colours from the Metallic Accents set for this canvas. I kept to all the pinks and paler colours through to the grey.
With a wide 3/4 inch paint brush I painted on the various colours one at a time in random spots over the background of the canvas, letting them blend and run together to create a marbled effect. Later I used a smaller brush to add some paint splats.

The water colour paint are so easy to use. I start them off with a spray of water to activate them and use them from the individual pots, I also use the palette tray in the lid, to blend some of the colours together and to add more water to get a really watery mixture going for a ‘wash’.

The chipboard pieces were in the scrapbook kit. These I simply covered with a white embossing powder.

I used the journal card sheet, cut them all up individually, distressed the edges and backed them onto a piece of light 12×12 paper from the scrapbook kit and distressed those too.

I fussy cut these flower clusters out from one of the 13 Arts papers

I splatted some of the metallic paint on the background

Now to layer up the design. I used some cardboard behind some of the journal cards to ‘lift’ them up. This enabled me to slot under the chipboard pieces.

Add the fussy cut floral pieces

Next came the flowers, again I only used the pink flowers from the selection in the mixed media kit.

I used one of the silver metal frames from the scrapbook kit and added a cut piece of patterned paper to the inside. I then covered the paper with a thick layer of crackle glaze. This was slid into the card layers too.

Lastly I then splattered the paler metallic paint over the entire canvas and tipped the edges of the flowers with the metallic paint too.

Here are some close ups of the finished canvas….

“Paradise” Watercolor Canvas for Mixed Media Monday

Hey everyone Kim here, today I am sharing my project I made with with Mixed Media Kit. If you don’t know about our mixed media kits, let me tell you about them. The kit is filled with not only mediums, but a project so you can use our kits right out of the box.

Here is our October Mixed Media kit. It is filled with Watercolor mediums from Prima.  Watercolors are the it thing right now and our kit is the perfect size for you to try them out. You can subscribe to our kits here.

Check out the kit:

Here is what I created using the kit:

How about some close ups:

Lets talk about the background first. I took a stencil and some modeling paste to make the brick background. Once that was done, I began working with the watercolors.

I worked with the blue and green colors in the palette because I wanted to keep my beachy theme going in the background. I used less water in some areas to keep the color more opaque. In other areas, I used lots of water and dabbed a bit with a wet wipe to lift the color.

I also added lots of water to make sure the colors ran in between the bricks. For my frame, I went over it with the white pearl paint to give it a bit of shimmer. The fence was painted with the soft satin.

All the chipboard got a coat of clear gesso before I used the green watercolor (except the title)on it. It a couple of coats, but I do like the end result.  I also used some metallic rub-ons on the background, instead of stamps. I like the way the metallic blends in with the shimmer of the watercolors and paint.

I used the pink watercolor on my title and added some flowers from the kit. Then I used a few different colors from the watercolor palette to add some splashes to my canvas and called it done.

Hope you liked my little explanation of my Mixed Media Monday project.

Here is my weekly tip: When using chipboard, its always good to cover it with gesso before altering it. I like using clear, that way it doesn’t alter the color of paint or other medium I am applying to it.

The Tides Gone Out – Mixed Media Kit

Happy Friday!!!!

Today its the turn of the September Mixed Media Kit from Tres Jolie Kits!
And its a fantastic kit, especially as I have made a project relating to my favourite place …. the beach! My thoughts with this project was to create a piece of work titled ‘The tides gone out’.

Below is the contents of the Mixed Media Kit, with this lovely wooden heart from Darice ready to alter.

The lovely yummy goodies included to get messy with are from Prima, I’ve wanted to use these for ages, the Art extravagance Texture Fantasy Northern Lights, and I wasn’t disappointed!

I have used some extra mixed media products to create my textured background for the main kit products to be used on top off .

Here is a photo tutorial of my process in making this project.

I used some lattice chipboard pieces I had left over and painted them with a coat of gesso.

I very roughly painted the Darice Wooden heart so give it a shabby look. I really did splodge the paint on to give a very rough texture. When dry I added a couple pieces of roughly torn corrugated card.

And the pieces of chipboard lattice.

These had a light coat of gesso.
I then tied some string around the heart in two places and tied big loose bows. This is all to add texture and a little detail. Not all of this will show by the time we have finished… maybe only the bow bits.

Next I mixed the 3d balls and the micro seeds with some texture paste.

mixed together to create this….

Using a palette knife I then scraped this over some of the areas where I have been adding texture details.

After that I used another of my favourite products and that is Snow Tex, not just for snow effects!
I added this again with a palate knife and applied this quite lumpy so it dries with a raised look to it.

I allowed all this mixed media to dry before carrying on. The picket fence piece is wood and this was simply glued on.

To give a beachy/ seaside feel I love to use this spongy moss. It adds depth and a natural look to the theme we are trying to create.

The flowers were added next, these blend in perfectly and remind me of the drifts of flowers I see near the coast in Pembrokeshire.

Then it was the turn of the shells! And what a selection of shells there are!
I loved going through these and adding them to the project.
I tried to group them up and laid some on their sides so they looked like they were just laying how they had been left when the sea went out.
I also added the glittery Art pebbles at this point too.

Now for the ‘messy’ bit as I like to call it! 🙂
I put a small amount of each colour in my tray and started work with the darkest colour first.
The first colour I used as it was with no added water……

….. and using a stipple brush I dabbed the colour over the texture places I wanted to start the colour. My idea here is that its puddles and ponds of sea left caught from the tides oing out in the pebbles and shells.
Add a small amount, step back have a look and see where you want more, its completely choice as to how mad you go with these products, remember you will be calming it all down with the lighter colours on top in a minute.

Next do the same with the middle teal colour, using the stipple brush over the top of the dark blue.

I then gently spritzed this teal coloured layer with water to make it ‘run’ a little and then dried it with a heat gun.

The 3rd very pale blue colour I applied with a paint brush, over the other two colours.

When I had finished using the pale blue paste over the project I watered the remainder down to make a ‘wash’

I used this ‘wash’ over the bare top part of the heart.

Lastly I added a quote from one of the papers, cut out and edges distressed with the edges tipped with some of the pastes to blend into the background.

And there we go…… my finished project.

Here are some close ups of the finished project.

Mixed Media Canvas

Hello all,

Today I’m sharing my canvas I created with the Tres Jolie Kits August Mixed Media Kit.
In the kit you get this unusual triangle shaped canvas, some fabulous mixed media products, a stencil and some Prima flowers!

Let me show you how I went about creating this canvas with the following photo tutorial.

Here is the contents of the Mixed Media Kit.

This is the wonderful range of mixed media products from 13 Arts.
The rainbow colours can be used in a variety of ways, I have used them in a couple of different ways to show you.

The first way I used the rainbow colour was by making my own coloured modelling/texture paste.
I mixed a tiny amount of the rainbow colour into the modelling paste. Start of with a tiny amount, you can always add more to strengthen the colour afterwards.

On the blank canvas I painted a layer of clear gesso to create a good surface to use mixed media.
I then mixed some of the blue rainbow colour with water on my brown craft mat, my second way of using it. I splattered the colour across the canvas and let it run over the canvas to create a washed look like in the picture below.

I let the colour run over the sides so wat ever angel you look at the canvas from you will always some.

I chose some journal cards as my feature to the canvas, and distressed the edges.

Next was the stencilling. I used the pink modelling paste I prepared earlier and using the stencil from the kit I used it over the canvas on the front and also the sizes.

I loved the effect this stencil gave…

Once dry I laid out the journal cards to work out my design.

I decided I didn’t want to keep the flowers white and wanted pink ones.
The third way of using the rainbow colour is to make a mist and put it in a bottle for easy application. Again you only need a small amount of colour powder to mix with water. A bottle is better to keep it in as you can give the product a good shake.

I spritzed over the flowers to make them a pink colour and leave to dry

I then started adding my embellishments. This string type material is from my stash but added a little detail to my embellishments. I added this underneath the flowers.

I then clustered up the Prima flowers I coloured pink, some of the leaves ( left white in colour) and a couple of resin feathers from last months kit.

I added some of the Santorini Say it with Crystals around the canvas.

I left the texture paste stencilled verse free of embellishments around it so it could be easily read as I thought this was a nice erse to read.

Then I used the white ink by splatting it liberally over the embellishments and canvas and allowed it to ‘run’ in places in dribbles.

Lastly I used the blue rainbow colour again by mixing it with water on my craft mat and the painting with it. coloured the edges of the flowers petals like in the picture below.

Mintay Layout with Ginny

Hello all! Ginny here!

I’m back today with a layout created using the Mintay papers from the August main Scrapbook kit from Tres Jolie Kits.

These papers are gorgeous!

Here is my layout:

I have also used the sketch again for this layout. For my layout the other day I turned the sketch around, this layout I have left in the format it was designed.

As usual my paper layers are all torn edges and they are inked too. I did the broad band across the middle with a lovely floral paper and highlighted it underneath with a piece of the blue lace.

The balloon chip board piece I have painted with gesso and then edged it with the same ink I inked the papers with.

My photo is layered up with some of the journal cards cut from the 12×12 paper. I curled some of the corners for extra detail.

I did a little fussy cutting of the pink flowers buds with the blue butterflies to add to my flower clusters.

My journaling (all be it small!) is fussy cut from the journal cards, distressed and inked.

Products Used on this Layout from Aug Kit:

* Mintey Papers: 7th Heaven: MT-7th-03

“Create” Mini Canvas with Rae

Happy Saturday!

Mixed Media Monday

Hey everyone Kim here. I’m back today to share my project from the July Mixed Media Kit. This kit is unlike other mixed media kits, where you just get the mediums. This kit gives you a project to complete, so you can use the mediums in the kit right away.

Let’s take a look at this month’s kit:

It’s got gesso (black, white and clear), mica powders, gum arabic, metals and a paintbrush to use all your mediums on. Paintbrushes are all the rage right now, so do miss out.

Here is what I created using my paintbrush:

Here are some close-ups:

I first adhered all my metals to the paint brush. Then I covered it all with a couple of coats of white gesso.

Once the gesso dried, I randomly added the mica powder 2 different ways. First I sprinkled some directly on the brush and misted with water. The second way was to make a mist using the gum arabic as a binding agent and the mica.

I found these amazing old spoons at a flea market and thought they would be the perfect embellishment for the paintbrush.

Here is a close up to see the texture:

I added micro beads to add texture and depth to the opening of the spoon and all around the handle. I also added some art stones from my stash.

I have plenty of supplies left over to complete another paintbrush. I think I may go dark (black gesso) on my next one. Stay tuned…

Hope you liked my little explanation of my Mixed Media Monday project.

Here is my weekly tip: When covering items in gesso, especially items that have uneven surfaces use a dabber to get the gesso in all the little nooks and crannies. A large paint brush is good to cover flat surfaces.

Mixed Media Kit Canvas by Ginny

Hello All,

I’m back with you today, this time with the Mixed Media kit from Tres Jolie Kits

These mixed media kits are fantastic, within the kit is a whole project to complete from start to finish, all the ‘mucky’ products (as I like to call all the paints and mediums lol) and the final embellishments to create your own masterpiece!

This months kit included a paint brush!
It has been great seeing what the other DT members came up with as you will find out!
And I’m looking forward to seeing photos of what you guys create too!

I used the paint brush and the embellishments to create a canvas.

Here it is…

The kit came with a boxed set of Mixed Media essentials from Finnabair Art Basics range.
These included clear gesso, black and white gesso in 2FL.OZ tubes, a good amount of each.
I have used the clear and the white on this project.

The canvas had a base coat of the clear gesso over it before anything else and then a coat of white gesso to create a good background.
Next I used a doily stencil from Prima with some Texture paste ( from last months mixed media kit)
and 4 doily patterns over the canvas overlapping it off the edges of the canvas.

Next came the fun part with the PearlEx colours. We had 3 gorgeous colours in the kit and the Gum Arabic. The Gum Arabic is a binder medium, mixed with the PearlEx and water it creates transparent water colours. It says on the pot to mix 1 part gum to 4 parts pigment (PearlEx) this creates a strong colour, I used a little less pigment to get a slightly softer colour.

Generally play around with amounts and strengths to get the colour and consistency that you want.
Over the spoon I used the gum and PearlEx but with not much water to get a thick consistency to sit in my spoon, the colour is stronger that way too.

I used the mixed watercolours over my canvas with a paint brush, one at a time allowing for some drying and using the palest colour first, building up a blended multi tonal effect.

When dry I added another layer of white texture paste with a different stencil. This stood out nicely then against the coloured background.

Next step is to choose your main embellishments. Mine obviously is the paint brush but also I wanted to include the gorgeous little light bulbs and the spoon!
These I have all stuck on the canvas with a soft gel medium. I find this sticks anything to a canvas really well. Allow time for it stick completely but you can still work on it whilst it is drying.

Stick the brush to the canvas with the gel medium. Paint over the brush with the white gesso and allow to dry. I then used the watercolours again on the brush running them down from the top of the brush to get a dripped effect.
When dry stick the spoon to the brush.

I used some of the Finnabair Mechanicals on the background too. Again these are stuck on with gel medium and then painted over with white gesso and the watercolours. I layered one up using the middle cut section of a doily from the main kit underneath it.

On top of the water coloured mechanicals I stuck the pretty little light bulbs ( I love these!)
At this point I switched to my hot glue gun to stick these embellishments. I set the bulbs on top of the Finnabair Mechanicals Wings and then decorated with flowers.

To finish the embellishment clusters off I did add some very pretty glass beads from my stash and a chippie word title painted in gesso and some pearls.

I used a sponge applicator to dab the tops of my flowers with white gesso and flicked some of the watercolours over the canvas to get a nice splattered effect.

I added some small detail with the microspheres from last months MM kit.
That’s the nice thing about these kits, you end up with a great stash of products which can then be used on future projects too.

The PearlEx in the spoon has been added over some soft mat gel just to make sure the thicker PearlEx solution did stick and stay where I wanted it too.

Project like these are so easy because really anything goes. There is no right or wrong way and each piece created is unique and individual to the person and creation. Just have fun, be brave and go with the flow and experiment. You cant go wrong!
